Water puppetry is a type of art that started a long time ago in around the 11th century in northern Vietnam. It became really famous during the Ly Dynasty. The theater in this art consists of a pool and a communal house on the water, called "thuy dinh". The house is decorated with typical items found in villages in northern Vietnam, such as flags and betel trees. Wooden puppets that are placed on water are controlled by skilled performers who are hiding inside the "thuy dinh". They use bamboo poles to make energetic movements. During the theatre performance, musicians play traditional instruments live and singers sing folk songs like Cheo or Quan Ho. The show tells many stories about the daily life of Vietnamese farmers in the past or their wish for a balanced weather to have good harvests.
